The Wine Road of the Etruscan Coast

There are pristine beaches with green pines, hillside walks and evenings at the disco--and great wines that have made this region known all over the world.

There is a small place a few kilometers from Bolgheri called La California. Perhaps it was truly destined that this area become the California of Italy; or even better, the Italian Bordeaux. The merit is due to the two Della Gherardesca sisters, one of whom married an Incisa of Rocchetta and the other an Antinori.

Mario Incisa invented Sassicaia, defined by a noted monthly magazine as ‘the most famous Italian wine in the world’. Lodovico Antinori created one of the most atmospheric wine cellars of Italy and began to produce Ornellaia, which in 1995 received recognition by the magazine Decanter as the best Italian Cabernet.

Piero Antinori converted his production of rosè, quite fashionable in the 70’s, into a magnificent Guado al Tasso, which immediately joined the top of the national oenological production. Added to these great wines is a fowering of young and enthusiastic producers who are reaching the very heights of quality.

And so The Etruscan Wine Coast Road (La Strada del Vino Costa degli Etruschi) was born: great wines, young and enthusiastic producers, but above all a territory situated parallel to and contiguous with the sea and blessed with everything that a visitor might wish to find:
- medieval towns, where the rhythm life continues at a human pace
- hills covered in forest and frequent encounters with wild boar, deer and bucks
- panoramas that unite the green of the vegetation with the intense blue of the sea
- a cheerful and welcoming people
- natural, flavoursome food that is an invitation to taste the wine, the fruit of these lands.

The Wine Road takes you along cultural, scenic and gastronomic itineraries, with a perfect integration between the spirit and material world:
- at Montescudaio, Guardistallo and Casale, the three most northerly communities of the ancient fiefdom of the Della Gherardesca.
- at Montecatini Val di Cecina and Castellina Marittima, ancient centres of mineral activities tied to the extraction of copper, and with the majority of wine-cellars.
- between Casale and Bolgheri in the territory of Bibbona where the 1635 hectare nature park Macchia della Mogona is located, seamed with trails immersed in the green copses of woods, which can be crossed on foot, bicycle or horseback.
- at Bolgheri, with its noble castle and Carduccian memories (Grandmother Lucia’s small cemetery and the valley of the cypresses are not to be missed).
- the Bolgherese road, which goes toward Castagneto and one of the loveliest green areas of the region: side-by-side are the Sassicaia vines, and the wine-cellars that produce Ornellaia and Le Macchiole. Not far from the road some olive mills make an instructive stop about the cold extraction process for extra virgin olive oil. Castagneto Carducci, an agricultural centre of medieval origins, dominates a countryside rich with olives, vines, woods and Mediterranean scrub, bordered to the west by the intense blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
- from Sassetta to Suvereto, a wooded area at the centre of the DOC Val di Cornia zone rich with scenic itineraries, it is possible to visit the ancient medieval towns of Suvereto and Campiglia; the parks of Montioni and Monte Calvi; the Rossi Lakes and the Archeological Mineral Park of Campiglia, with its Rock of San Silvestro and the vestiges of the mines and Etruscan foundries.
- Piombino and the Island of Elba, defined by Plinio as Insula vini ferax, where the wine tourist will be able to play the hunter, in search of that rare bottle of real Aleatico with its intense bouquet of jams and oriental spices.
