The cultivation of vines and the production of wines on the island of Elba has very ancient origins and dates back to the Etruscan age. Over time, numerous artifacts dating back to the Greek and Roman period have been found, which attest that the wine trade was already widespread thanks to methods suitable for the conservation and transport of this product. In the early 1900s, among the three largest wine-growing areas in Tuscany, one of these was the island of Elba. At the time the Elban territory was very different: between the 40s and the early 50s of the twentieth century numerous terraces (also called terraced cultivation or steps) stood out on the Elban landscape, making it possible to cultivate land with particular slopes. It was possible to see terraces that covered the slopes of the hills up to over 300 meters high, as in the Marcianese. With the advent of tourism, wine production has decreased, most of the terraces have been cleared by new constructions or have been covered with scrub. Today the production is concentrated in flat areas. The current tourism development has generated a new "business" for local wineries. To date, production and bottling have increased significantly and Elba's wineries have come together in the Consortium for the protection of Elba wine.
