Capoliveri (Southern shore)
Sand type: Sandy - 280m
Wind exposure: SW-S-SE

The beach gets its name from an old 16th century legend about Lorenzo and Maria, two young lovers who tragically disappeared in the sea on the eve of their wedding. On the 14th July every year there is a historic pageant about this distressing story with a torchlight procession. The beach is illuminated by the lights of a thousand torches and the procession of costumed people pass on foot and in boats to search for the two lovers. During the festival there is also the challenge of the shawl, that is Maria’s shawl which was found snagged onto a rock.

The splendid Innamorata cove is near the Gemini Islands, a beautiful place rich in fine examples of marine fauna. The crystal clear water and the fine sand make it one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

Getting there: The beach can be easily reached from Capoliveri along about 4 km of tarmac road, or along a dirt-track diversion on the old road that was once used to get to the mines and now links Capoliveri to the village of Ripe Alte.
