Napoleon Museum – Palazzina dei Mulini

Piazzale Napoleone

Official residence of Napoleon and his court from 1804 to 1815, it shows us public life, above all in the brief ten-month period of his exile on the Island of Elba.

The Palace was built about a century before the Emperor arrived on one of the highest points of the historic centre of Portoferraio, there had been windmills nearby built to take advantage of the frequent sea breezes. This antique stronghold has recently been restored. Here the Emperor prepared a sumptuous room for parties and had French style gardens laid out, a marvellous avenue of orange trees is of note, the garden has a view of the gulf.

Furniture of Napoleon’s time, weapons, a library and pictures are kept in the Mulini Palace. The first Napoleonic flag raised on the island is looked after here with care: a red stripe on a white background with three golden bees, it is a symbol of the industriousness seamen of the Island.

Getting there: On foot through the historical centre of Portoferraio.
