Aleatico DOC

This noble wine, which as Napoleon declared "makes you stronger and healthier", has only recently obtained Elba Denomination of Origin Controlled status.

In order to get this mark of quality, Elban producers have modernised their vineyards to conform to the regulatory norms (such as D.M. 09/07/67 and G.U. N. 200 of 10/08/67).

In many cases, the vine cultivation and vinification-- not to mention the refining and bottling processes--have changed. In some wine cellars, however, it is still possible to taste wine from grapes which have undergone the semi-drying process in the sun on trellises that are covered with cloth sheets at night to protect them from the dew.

The origins of this wine have ancient roots. Typical of their oenology, the first to make this grape with its aromatic scents known were the ancient Greeks; but it was the Romans who introduced mass cultivation of the Aleatic vines, favoured by a soil rich in phosphorus, iron and arsenic, not to mention the mild climate and warm sun of Elba. Napoleon then made it his favourite wine and gave it fame and lustre when he returned to France from his exile on the island.

According to the production regulations, Aleatico of Elba must be 100% produced from those Aleatico grapes that have a taste similar to Moscato. With a late maturation and a low productivity rate, the result is a limited amount of Aleatico. Today, notwithstanding the resurgence of high quality tourism in search of value and tradition, just 5/6 hectares of the island are dedicated to these vines. The DOC mark institution has again made it possible to taste this wine which has been refined in small oak barrels for up to 5/7 years.
