The type and spread of cultivation methods of the Ansonica grape have secured the Denomination of Origin Controlled mark for two white Elban wines.

The Ansonica grape is also known as Inzolia and is very widespread in Sicily where it is used for the celebrated Marsala wine. Today it can readily be found in many vineyards in Italian territory together with other varieties. In the past it was considered by farmers to be table grapes. Notwithstanding its ancient Sicilian roots, today the Tuscan Archipelago and Argentario Coast can be considered the typical production area from which the wine is derived.

Ansonica is a white grape, rich in sugars, with big bunches of oblong grapes, almost always cultivated in the ‘alberello’ style according to ancient Sicilian tradition. In the Tuscan islands and along the Etruscan Coast, two DOC wines are produced from these grapes: Ansonica Costa dell’Argentario and Ansonica dell’Elba. This last exists in an even more noted sweet version.

Ansonica dell’Elba is a dry white wine with a limited acid content. It has a well-rounded taste with body and can be matched with fish-based first course dishes, grilled foods or hearty soups. On Elba, Ansonica wine is made with 85 % white Ansonica grapes blended with other white grape vine types authorised by the regulators. Of an intense straw yellow colour, its taste ranges from dry to honeyed. Its minimum alcohol content is 11.5 % and it’s served at a temperature of 10/12°.

However, up until now, these same Ansonica grapes have more usually been made into Ansonica Passito wine, for which this time they are used 100 %, and subjected to the semi-drying process in the open air. The colour of this version ranges from intense straw yellow to amber; with an intense, heavenly scent; and a flavour that goes from honeyed to sweet.

The alcohol content of Ansonica Passito is more than that of Ansonica dell’Elba, reaching a minimum of 15 percent developed from an initial 13 percent. It’s taste is honeyed. For an accompanying dish it’s best to think of puff or shortcrust pastry, the generic biscuit and, naturally, the typical torta briaca. Passito wine is served at 12/14°C.
