San Michele Church at Capoliveri

The parish church of Capoliveri, referable to the first half of the twelfth century, is the oldest evidence of Romanesque architecture on the island. In the locality of San Rocco, just outside the town, near an abandoned cemetery, is the Pieve di San Michele in Capoliveri. It represents what remains of a medieval church in Pisan architecture. In 1376 Pope Gregory XI, during the return trip from Avignon to Rome, stopped in Capoliveri and celebrated mass in the Pieve di San Michele. The parish church of Capoliveri, referable to the first half of the twelfth century, is the oldest evidence of Romanesque architecture on the island. The few remains of the parish church of Capoliveri that are possessed testify that this church constituted the most artistically accomplished example of Elban Romanesque. Remarkable is the perfection of the wall covering, for which a local limestone with pink shades was used which, in well-worked sketches, formed regular rows.
