The sanctuary of monserrato

In 1606 José Pons y León of the Dukes of Arcos, Spanish governor of Naples and first governor of the square of Longone, was surprised by a sudden storm of sirocco while climbing the Tyrrhenian coast beyond the Argentario. The sea was rough and the navigation dangerous. The governor then invoked "Nuestra Señora di Monteérrat" to which, as a good Spaniard, he was very devoted. As God wanted, the vessel landed in the safe waters of the Gulf of Porto Longone. Don José, out of gratitude, had a sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna di Monserrato built in memory of the one of the same name existing in Catalonia, near Barcelona. The sanctuary was built three kilometers from Porto Azzurro.
